Just a few tickets remain for our
first-ever
Library Wine Tasting
If you still are thinking of joining us
for this exclusive after-hours tasting
event, you should act quickly. With
only 8 tickets remaining as of today,
your window of opportunity to be one of
the lucky few who will get to sample and
purchase some of our best cellared wines
from the past 10 years is quickly
disappearing.
On March 18 from 6-8 p.m., guests will
enjoy a private guided tasting by
cellarmaster Larry Satek and head
winemaker Shane Christ. The evening
will be elegantly complimented by heavy
hors d'ouevres catered by Apron's Inn,
and will conclude with the exclusive
opportunity to purchase the library
wines you tasted.

sell their original works can submit an
application for one or both of our
summer Art Shows, to be held June 18 and
August 20. Cost is $35 for a 12' x 12'

Dear Christina,
The
harbinger of Spring for most
people seems to be the Robin,
the red-breasted songbird that
gives indication that the cold
weather is subsiding and the
flora will begin budding soon. For
us here at Satek Winery, the
return of the Robins signals the
first chapter of the new
vineyard season: pruning.
We are getting a later start on
our pruning this year, due to
the multiple heavy snows we've
gotten in February. Our team
will spend the next two months
in the vineyards, conducting one
of the most important
preparations they can do to
ensure an optimal growing
season. First, they will
pre-prune, where they will cut
back the obvious overgrowth
before the vines begin to bud.
After buds begin to form, they
will go back through and
meticulously prune each vine.
This process is very
labor-intensive, as they count a
designated number of desired
buds (usually ranging from 40-60
per vine, depending on variety)
and remove the remaining so that
the vine will yield better fruit
and to encourage deeper root
growth. They try to select
evenly spaced buds so the fruit
will be easier to
harvest, leaving more buds on
the top wires than lower wires
to help facilitate
photosynthesis by not having too
many clusters under the canopy.
They also spend time retraining
some vines that have become
detached from their trellises.
Even with all this work, Mother
Nature can still wreak havoc on
the vineyard. Last year is a
good example: we got a deep
frost on May 10, which destroyed
most of the primary buds on the
vines. Luckily, grapevines will
produce secondary buds when that
happens; but these new buds will
yield a much smaller quantity of
fruit.
Fred Barnes, who has done much
of our vineyard management over
the past several years, is
enamored with his work:
"Watching the growth cycle of
grape development and maturation
is pretty miraculous. They are
very resilient- their root
structure reaches 7 to 8 feet
into the ground. They are built
with this DNA to survive, and
survive anything."
A lot of our visitors inquire
about our vines. They
want to know what varieties we
grow, how we take care of the
vineyard, and how difficult it
is to grow grapes. This
has inspired me to begin a
photo-journey of a vine: I will
take a picture of the same vine
each month for the full season,
so you can witness the budding,
flowering, growth of clusters,
maturation, and harvest of the
ripe grapes. Keep
an eye out in each newsletter
for that month's photo of the
vine.

New Steuben 2010 to be
released soon 
We are always eager to roll out
the new vintages of our wines,
but to say that of our new
Steuben 2010 would be an
understatement. Head winemaker
Shane Christ is particularly
keyed up, saying that this
vintage of our perennially
popular semi-sweet rosé may be
our best yet. If you haven't
ever tried our Steuben wine,
think White Zinfandel but with
more strawberry character, and
made from locally-grown grapes.
The new vintage will be
available in the next few days
when the 2008 sells out, so be
sure to ask to sample it during
your next visit, and tell us
what you think!
