Dear Christina,
If you have had the
pleasure of meeting Satek
Winery's owner Larry
Satek on a visit here,
count yourself among the
lucky few. He can be
found mostly
behind-the-scenes,
overseeing the business
as well as the
production side of the
operation. With his
winemaking talent
exceeded only by his
humbleness, Larry
prefers to let his wines
speak for themselves.
So when his co-owner and
wife, Pam, suggested--
er, insisted-- that our
new meritage-style dry
red wine bear his name,
he strongly protested.
But in the end, nothing
seemed more fitting, and
"Larry's Luscious Dry
Red" was chosen as the
name to don the labels
of our newest addition
to our portfolio.
 Indiana
wine grape growers know
there aren't many dry
red grapes that grow
well in this climate.
With Larry's Luscious,
you will get to
experience three of
Indiana's best.
Completely unique, this
blend of Chambourcin,
Corot Noir, and Noiret
grapes has won favor
with early
tasters. Larry's
Luscious exhibits rich
fruit flavors, hints of
black pepper, and
wonderful mouthfeel,
complemented with oak.
The release date is
pending, but we hope to
have it available for
sale sometime in
September. Look for an
email announcement of
the release or check our
website.
We hope you'll get a
chance to come in and
sample Larry's Luscious
Dry Red this fall, and
let us know what you
think!
Sláinte!

Summer Art Fair II:
August 21
 Our
second Art Show of
the summer,
scheduled for
Saturday, August 21
from 10 a.m. - 5
p.m., is a forum to
showcase the talent
of dozens of
regional artists
representing various
artistic media. For
our winery patrons,
it is a wonderful
chance to enjoy the
summer weather at
this family-friendly
event, held outdoors
on our lower lawn
promenade. We have
invited Ambrosia
Bella as our
exclusive food
vendor, who will
have fabulous
gourmet foods and
sweets available.
Stroll through the
exhibits while
enjoying a glass of
your favorite Satek
wine and some
delicious epicurean
fare, and you just
may find that piece
of art that would
compliment your home
perfectly.
Our website will be
updated the week
prior to the show
with a list of the
artists
participating.
Admission is free to
the Art Show, and as
always, the winery
will be open for
tasting and
purchase.

Artist's love of rare
Sea Glass inspired him
to create his own
 Joe
Driver, better known
as "Papa Joe", has
been an avid
collector of
unusual rocks and
minerals for many
years, which he
tumble-polishes and
makes into beautiful
jewelry using his
skils in Lapidary
Arts. One look at
his pieces and you
can sense his
admiration for the
earth's treasures
with which he
works. But even in
his vast collection,
he was missing one
of his favorites--
Sea Glass, which is
glass washed up on
beaches after it has
been tumbled by
waves, water, and
sand. The reason?
Its rarity, as
beachcombing
collectors have
obtained this much
sought-after booty
for its intrinsic
beauty and use in
jewelry-making.
So Papa Joe decided
to create his own
version of Sea
Glass, and began
with used wine
bottles from nearby
Satek Winery to
achieve the array of
colors and free-form
shapes that are
characteristic of
the most desirable
beach glass. With a
smile, he describes
to me the "very
scientific" process
of breaking up the
wine bottles by
dropping them inside
a bucket. This
yields pieces of
varying sizes and
shapes, with no two
pieces alike. He
then tumbles them in
a commercial rock
tumbler with
silicone carbide
grit for 10 days,
which give them the
patina that's
frosted and smooth
like natural Sea
Glass.

From there he
transforms the
tumbled glass into
works of art. He
selects smaller
pieces to transform
into earrings, and
medium to larger
pieces, which will
become one-of-a-kind
necklaces. One of
the most challenging
tasks is drilling
holes in the glass
to attach the
jumprings and
earwires. A
delicate process, he
must use a tiny
diamond drill bit
underwater (to keep
the bit from getting
too hot) to create
the small hole
without breaking the
Sea Glass. He then
finishes the pieces
into wearable art
with sterling silver
or surgical steel
findings, organza
ribbons, Greek
leather, silk or
rayon cords, or
suede.
Papa Joe's Satek Sea
Glass creations,
along with his rock
Lapidary, earned him
a place in a juried
exhibit at the Fort
Wayne Museum of Art,
entitled "Earth
Treasures in
Jewelry." The
prestige of
exhibiting his work,
however, isn't what
motivates him. What
he enjoys most is
sharing his love of
the natural and
unique beauty of the
stones and Sea Glass
with others. Says
Driver, "Each
polished stone is
waiting to be
discovered and
anxious to tell the
artist what it wants
to become."
Joe Driver will be
participating in
Satek Winery's
August 21st Art
Show, where you can
see, touch, try on,
and purchase his
distinctive rock and
Sea Glass jewelry.
You can also
discover your own
inner artist at one
of Papa Joe's
upcoming workshops.
He will be part of
the Merchant
Marketplace at the
September 2nd
W.I.N.O.S. at Satek
Winery. There you
will be able select
your rocks from his
vast collection, and
he will help you
create your own
unique jewelry.
Also in September
(date TBD), he will
be leading a Sea
Glass wind chime
class at the
Carnegie Public
Library in Angola.
He will supply the
Sea Glass, wire, and
your choice of
grapevines,
bittersweet, or
contorted willow
from which to hang
the chimes; you
supply the
creativity. For
more information on
the dates, times,
and cost, contact
Joe Driver at

Summer
is
still
going
strong
but
our
winemakers
and
staff
are
preparing
for
our
favorite--
albeit
exhausting--
time
of
year.
In
September
and
October,
our
winery
goes
into
full-fledged
production
mode
with
the
onset
of
Harvest
and
Crush.
This
is
when
we
get
to
head
out
to
the
vineyards
to
harvest
our
grapes
(in
addition
to
getting
shipments
in
of
grapes
we
source
from
other
growers).
When
the
grapes
are
brought
back
to
the
winery,
we
start
"Crush",
which
is
the
crushing
and
fermenting
of
the
grapes
to
begin
the
winemaking
process.
I'd
describe
this
process
in
detail,
but
I'd
rather
invite
you
to
come
out
and
witness
it
for
yourself.
This
is,
by
far,
the
most
visually
interesting
tour
we
can
give
you,
so
consider
planning
a
visit
for
a
weekday
this
fall.
You'll
be
rewarded
not
only
with
a
new
appreciation
for
the
wine
you
drink,
but
we
also
may
let
you
taste
the
reshly
picked
grapes
or
the
free-run
juice
as
it
comes
out
of
the
press.
If
you
plan
to
visit,
do
call
ahead
to
see
what
is
on
the
production
schedule
that
day,
as
we
are
subject
to
mother
nature's
whims
and
may
not
be
harvesting
if
the
weather
hasn't
cooperated.
