Satek Winery Announces
Expansion Plans
Satek Winery located near Fremont and Angola, Indiana, announces a major expansion of the winery. The addition to Satek Winery will occur in two stages and take about 16 months to complete. The first stage doubles the production space of the winery by adding over 1500 sq. ft. Construction will start immediately. The second stage is slated for the spring of 2007. It will expand the tasting room and include an area for private events. It is projected to add over 2200 sq. ft. to the winery.
There will also be a substantial need to purchase new
equipment and tanks. Satek Winery also anticipates the creation of 15-20 new
jobs.
Originally designed for 10,000 gal, Satek Winery has produced
approximately 13,000 gal in the current facility in the last year.
“We are bursting at the seams, and desperately need to expand the
production space,” says co-owner Pam Satek.
“We are thrilled at how Northeast Indiana enjoys having a winery, and
are delighted to be able to expand to meet our customer’s needs.”
Winemaker and co-owner Larry Satek said, “Satek Winery –
indeed all Indiana wineries – are pleased that the state legislature acted to
support the Farm Winery industry at the end of this session.
Satek Winery had shelved these expansion plans during the early part of
the legislative session when the winery was in danger of being put out of
business, but are excited that we can once again move forward toward providing
our customers the Indiana wine that they desire.”
Pam Satek added, “We are very grateful for all the support of our local
legislators, particularly Rep. Dick Dodge.”
Architectural Designs, Inc. of Fort Wayne is doing the design
work for the expansion. The first
phase design is completed, and the preliminary work is started on the second
phase. It is anticipated that
the production room expansion phase will be completed by this July.
The second phase will probably not be completed until late summer of
2007.
Satek Winery will continue to remain open daily, including
Sundays, for wine tasting from 10 AM until 6 PM throughout the construction
period.

Satek Winery Fact Sheet
Satek Winery started as a
commercial vineyard, selling grapes to other Indiana wineries, in 1992.
The intent was to eventually open our own winery as a “retirement”
business.
The vineyard was
established on land owned by the family on the north end of Lake James.
The land was purchased in 1915 by Pam Satek’s great grandfather Fred
Kreibaum. The land was a working
apple orchard for many years, but had grown wild when the Satek’s started the
vineyard in 1992.
Groundbreaking for the
winery was held in late 1999. The
winery opened on June 30, 2001 with Pam, Larry and one part time employee.
Satek Winery currently has 14 employees.
All the original wine in
2001 was made from grapes grown in Satek Winery’s Lake James vineyard.
The winery opened with four wines, although eventually 12 wines would be
released during 2001.
Although vineyard acreage
has increased, the winery’s needs have outstripped the growth and Satek Winery
has had to purchase grapes. Most
(80%) are from other Indiana, Michigan and Pennsylvania vineyards to remain as
close in character to our grapes as possible.
California grapes are also purchased.
The winery was originally
designed for 10,000 gal capacity, although nearly 13,000 gal were produced in
the last 12 months. With the
expansion, production can be increased to an anticipated 25,000 – 30,000 gal.
Satek Winery has expanded
its vineyard from the original 2 acres to 8 acres (4 owned and 4 contracted).
A ton of grapes will produce about 150 gal of wine.
An acre of grapes will produce 3-7 tons of grapes.
A newly planted grapevine
will take about 5 years to reach full production, and about 7 years to reach
full flavor maturity. Grapevines
generally slow down in production after about 35 years, but may live to be 100
years old, or older.
Satek Winery has had nearly
80% of its wines win medals in the third largest international wine competition
in the US for each of the last three years.
Wines grown on Satek Winery
vineyards have won gold medals, and Best in Class awards, from dry red and white
wines to semi-sweet red and white wines.
Pam Satek, an Indiana
University graduate, was a teacher, followed by being a Principal of an
Elementary School in the Lutheran School System for 16 years. Larry Satek holds
a Ph.D. in Chemistry and was a research scientist for 23 years, after 7 years of
being a college chemistry professor.

SATEK WINERY UPDATE as of 30 June, 2005
Satek Winery will celebrate our FOURTH ANNIVERSARY July 1-July 10. We will again give away one free wine glass with every two bottles of wine purchased. This year we will give away the Sparkling Wine Flutes with our logo on them. It is a wonderful container for our new "Perfect Ending" muscat dessert wine since Perfect Ending has a few bubbles in it because we froze our fingers and bottled it at 25 degrees.
We also anticipate releasing "Pam's Perfect Little Red Wine" for our Anniversary. This semi-dry red has loads of strawberry and raspberry character with a little oak and tannins.

Satek
Winery Makes Wall Street Journal
Satek
Winery located near Fremont and Angola, Indiana, was featured in the March 25th
“Encore” section of the Wall Street Journal.
The Wall Street Journal highlighted couples that retired to start
vineyards and wineries. Pam and
Larry Satek (the name rhymes with attic) were first interviewed last October by
Christine Larson, feature writer for the Wall Street Journal.
Ms. Larson contacted about 12 couples who had retired from other
occupations to become winery owners to hear their tales of success, and
sometimes, frustration. As Ms.
Larson completed her conversation with Pam Satek, she stated, “only a couple
of the wineries will be mentioned in the article.”
Therefore,
the Sateks were extremely pleased to find themselves as part of this feature
story—picture and all. The
photographer caught the Sateks bottling their vintage 2001 and newly released
“101 Lakes White” wine.
As a complete
surprise to the Sateks, and in an unbelievable coincidence, another winery
featured in the article was started by Greg and Fran Cramer in Oregon.
Larry and Greg had been very good friends during graduate school at the
University of Maryland. They had lost contact with each other only to find
themselves, both chemists and now winemakers, featured in the same Wall
Street Journal article. The two
of them spent over an hour on the phone catching up with each other and
comparing winery stories.
Satek Winery has opened for
the season—Wednesday through Saturday from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM and Sunday from
noon to 5:00 PM. (Yes, you can buy
wine on Sunday.) Guests are welcome
to taste the 2001 vintage wines including Steuben and 101 Lakes White.
Merlot, Chardonnay, and Syrah will be available soon.
Satek Winery is located at 6208 N. Van Guilder Road. (About 1.3 miles east of the Outlet Mall on SR 120. Turn north on Van Guilder Road.) Check out the web site at www.satekwinery.com or call (260) 495-WINE.

Larry and Pam Satek (their name rhymes with attic) began growing grapes in 1992 on a hillside overlooking Lake James, the same hillside on which Pam’s Great-grandfather had cultivated an apple orchard many years ago. Pam had long dreamed about re-establishing this hillside as an apple orchard, but Larry convinced her that grapes would actually be a better choice. The wines that you are invited to taste at Satek Winery are made from these grapes. They include Foch, Seyval, and DeChaunac grapes—all French-American hybrids, a heartier grape that will survive the Indiana climate. Another variety grown is the Steuben, an American grape, that makes a great wine for Steuben County.
