SATEK W
INERY
UPDATE AS OF JUNE 10, 2008. Spring has been
kind to us. The weather has been cool all spring, but not cold. The
one frost event did not hit us at all, so we are fortunate. So far, the
flowers look good, and we are in the start of "bloom". Now we do not want
heavy rains. Grapes are self pollinating, so a heavy rain strips the
pollen away, and prevents the formation of the grape berry.
We are looking at having a number of events at the winery this summer. Our anniversary week, June 27-July 6, will feature port wine glasses as our glass give away. Since these glasses cost nearly three times as much as our regular glass, we will need to give one away for every four bottles. However, we will have our regular glasses available if you wish to do our normal "1 glass for every 2 bottles of wine purchased". We have had a lot of requests for port or dessert wine glasses, and we are working on additional wines in the dessert wine category. We are planning a Steuben dessert wine, a raspberry port, a blackberry port, and a mango wine.
Satek Winery will also be holding two Art Exhibit weekends, July 19 and August 16. We are signing up local artists, and the Angola Regional Artists Guild to display their works. This year, we are having only two dates, but we are having a number of artists showing their works on each date. Please come out and see what local Steuben artists are creating. It is great fun (and don't forget that we have wines available as well, of course!!).
Satek Winery is also sponsoring a play at Tibbits Theater. Please consider seeing one of Tibbits's excellent plays this summer, whether it be this one or one of their other fine plays. More information can be found at Tibbits's website, at www.tibbits.org..
And, we will have a Summerfest again. We will have it August 23, and it will be a bit different. We will have limited tickets, and advanced ticket sales only, but we are sure it will be a lot of fun.
SATEK WINERY UPDATE AS OF SEPTEMBER 15. A lot has happened in the last few weeks. In chronological order, Satek Winery won 11 medals in the Indy International, including two gold medals. One of these gold medals is a Concordance Gold, for our 2006 Vidal Blanc. The wine is wonderful for anyone who likes fruity dry wines. Vidal Blanc is one of the great grapes for making World Class Ice Wines in Canada, but we have had much success with making a dry white wine with crisp green apple, pear, fruit flavors, and wonderfully complex. This is the second time our six year old winery has had a Vidal Blanc win a gold medal as a dry, white wine in one of the largest International Wine Competitions in the United States, with over 3200 entries from 17 countries. Only about one half of one percent of wines wine a Concordance Gold. If you like dry, white wines, come try our Vidal Blanc.
Our other Gold medal was our Raspberry fruit wine. This is also the second time our Raspberry wine has won a gold medal for our six year old winery.
Our Silver medal winners include our 2004 Syrah (now sold out), our 2005 Syrah, and our 2005 Old Vine Red Zinfandel. We are so pleased that so many of our dry, red wines win these medals. But also, our most popular 101 Lakes Red, a semi-sweet red wine also won a silver medal, as did our Blackberry fruit wine. Bronze medals were captured by our 2005 Port, 101 Lakes White, 2005 Riesling (now sold out), and 2006 Pinot Gris.
Second on the list of updates is the new shipping rules. Near the end of August, a US District Court, in a case decided by Judge Tinder, ruled on several parts of the Indiana State Law, ruling some of them constitutional and striking down some other parts. For Indiana Wineries, only one part appears to be of major significance - other parts are of importance to out of state wineries. No longer will Indiana residents have to come to the our winery to have a "face to face" transaction prior to having wine shipped to you. We may now collect the information, including a statement of accuracy under penalty of perjury, and some state issued id form, by fax, snail mail, or email. Of course, any resident of any other state is under that state's laws, many of which are less consumer friendly than Indiana was.
And last, CRUSH has started. This is that exciting time of the year when the grapes come in. We will be harvesting more grapes that we have ever done, three times what we did only 6 years ago when we started the winery. Our vineyards have tripled in acreage, and we are working with other growers to produce even more grapes in Steuben County. Remember that it takes 5 years for a vineyard to hit full production, and perhaps 7 years to fully mature, so we will continue to grow as fast as we can make it work.
Satek Winery Update as of August 25th. Our DeChaunac is now sold out. We're sorry, but we'll have more next year. So far, the crop looks good, so look for a release on about June 20 of 2008.

SATEK WINERY UPDATE as of 14 June 2007. Many of the new vintages are now in bottles, and more will be coming out soon. We have our Vidal Blanc, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay out for dry whites, and our DeChaunac will be released June 28. Other wines will be released throughout the summer. We may or may not do a blueberry wine this year. The freeze of early April destroyed much of the blueberry crop, and we will have to see what happens to the price of blueberries. Satek winery will be hosting a Summer Artist Series where artists will exhibit work and demonstrate their skills. Currently we have the following artists scheduled:
June 16 Joe Driver, Jewelry from Satek Wine Bottles
July 14 Shirley Brauker, Painter and Potter
July 21 Tarma Van Aken, Painter
July 28 Alicia Moeller, Jeweler
August 11 Mark Boswell, Photographer
August 18 Shirley Brauker, Panter and Potter
August 25 Joe Driver, Jewelry from Satek Wine Bottles
SATEK WINERY UPDATE as of 23 October 2006. There has been a lot of progress made over the last few months. We have opened up our new area, and filled up up with bottled wine. We now have a lot of space original area for new tanks, bottling, and other winemaking activities. We released and sold out of our DeChaunac, and have recently released our Blueberry and our Merlot. We have had an interesting Crush, with grapes maturing with low sugar values. By that we mean that the grapes were very mature in terms of pH and total acidity, but we needed to add a little sugar to get it up to the right level. There was a lot more rain than we needed this year. All of our grapes have been picked, and all of our California grapes are in. We still have some Pennsylvania grapes to receive, near the Lake Erie area. Satek Winery gets about 80% of our grapes from within 350 miles of the winery.
SATEK WINERY UPDATE as of 8 May 2006. Construction is proceeding smoothly, and the new section is already under roof. We anticipate moving in during some part of June. We now have Blackberry again, and we will release our Riesling on May 12. Our 101 Lakes White will probably be out on May 19, but call ahead to be sure.
SATEK WINERY UPDATE as of 13 April 2006. We are expanding. We broke ground on Monday, April 10 and have the foundation already in. We expect to be completed about June 30th in time for our Fifth Anniversary. Framing is supposed to start next week. The legislation that was passed by the Indiana legislature will alter our shipping policy. Check out our shipping rules page to see what needs to happen.
SATEK WINERY UPDATE as of 5 December 2005. The big news is that Indiana wineries can again ship wines to our Indiana customers. A Marion County Superior Court Judge ruled that the Indiana wineries had negotiated the right to ship wine to Indiana customers legally in 1978. While the law does not state explicitly that we can ship, it also does not explicitly prohibit us from shipping. So we are again shipping to our Indiana customers. Enjoy.
SATEK WINERY UPDATE as of 12 November 2005. The "crush season" is winding down. We have only our Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon to press, and to receive our purchased Riesling and Vidal from Pennsylvania. The wines are coming along nicely, with all of our grapes and the Eastern grapes we purchased doing very well with the hot, dry summer.
We also have released our blueberry wine, and will release our blackberry wine next weekend, November 19 on Saturday. We will have a one case limit, like the raspberry, for the moment, but we have more fermenting and are trying to keep all three fruit wines on the shelf at all times before the end of the year. We really appreciate the way our customers have enjoyed our fruit wines, and thank you for your patience as we worked to make about 10 times as much as we ever had done before (we make only small batches), and in only 6 months instead of a year.
SATEK WINERY UPDATE as of 21 October 2005. Chardonnay, Steuben and Cabernet will arrive this weekend. We just sold out of our 2004 Riesling, but we are going to have more than twice as much next year. Meanwhile, we still have plenty of Soren's Favorite, a wine similar to Riesling and Gewürztraminer made from grapes that we grow right here in Northern Indiana.
SATEK WINERY UPDATE as of 10 October 2005. We have crushed and are fermenting Zinfandel, Merlot, Syrah, Seyval, Muscat, Pinot Gris, Marechal Foch, DeChaunac and Steuben. We are still awaiting Chardonnay, Riesling, Vidal, and Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest of our Steuben. Life does not settle down until all the reds are pressed and all the whites are fermenting, so we still have a ways to go. We will start pressing our Syrah in a week or two, and do the other reds later.
SATEK WINERY UPDATE as of 22 Sept 2005. We have harvested our Steuben, Foch and DeChaunac. We did have some deer and bird damage this year - actually, quite a bit, but we'll do ok. We will just have to buy a few more grapes from our sources. Other grapes are arriving, and so life is getting busy at the winery. Hope to see you - and perhaps you will see us crushing or pressing next years wine.
SATEK WINERY UPDATE as of 7 Sept 2005. Harvest and crush is near. Our grapes will be picked soon, and others will be arriving in the next few weeks. We have released the new Merlot, Marechal Foch, Zinfandel, and Chardonnay in the last few weeks.
SATEK WINERY UPDATE as of 23 Aug 2005 - More raspberry wine, more than twice as much as we had before. We are also releasing our 2004 Chardonnay on August 25.
SATEK WINERY UPDATE as of 16 Aug 2005 - A roller coaster of a ride for raspberry. For those who were here, it seemed surreal. We were selling raspberry at the rate of one case a minute. We have more on the way, and even more after that. We anticipate bottling about ever two weeks or so. Please be patient. We are only a small, tiny winery that has a huge demand for this wine. We are trying to get it under control.
SATEK WINERY UPDATE as of 13 Aug 2005 - Release of the 2004 Old Vine Red Zinfandel. Our 2003 Zin is (was?) a marvelous wine. For those who have some, rejoice in how it has developed. A Silver medal winner this year, it should keep improving. Unfortunately, we are out of the '03. But the '04 is quite good now, and should improve with age. We think it might even be better than the '03 was at this stage!
SATEK WINERY UPDATE as of 24 July 2005 - We had a small bottling run of raspberry, and have run out, but please be patient. We have much more to bottle, and are committed to getting our fruit wines on the shelf for the bulk of the year. Thank you for your patientce.
SATEK WINERY UPDATE as of 14 July 2005 - We are working with the raspberry and have a tentative bottling date for next week. However, we may need to delay it a bit if it still hasn't clarified. Sorry folks, this does happen sometimes. Thank you for your patience.
11 July 2005 The release of the raspberry wine will be slightly delayed. It hasn't clarified as fast as it has in the past and will require a little more time and effort. Please be patient - it is quite nice.
30 June 2005 ==Satek Winery will celebrate our FOURTH ANNIVERSARY July 1-July 10. We will again give away one free wine glass with every two bottles of wine purchased. This year we will give away the Sparkling Wine Flutes with our logo on them. It is a wonderful container for our new "Perfect Ending" muscat dessert wine since Perfect Ending has a few bubbles in it because we froze our fingers and bottled it at 25 degrees.
We also anticipate releasing "Pam's Perfect Little Red Wine" for our Anniversary. This semi-dry red has loads of strawberry and raspberry character with a little oak and tannins.
